Alzheimer*s disease (AD) is an irreversible\, progressive ne urological disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills\, and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. AD affects people in all parts of the world\, with age being the biggest risk factor. The in cidence of AD is one in ten over the age of 65\, one in two by age 90.

\n\n

Cenna Biosciences is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of no vel drugs to prevent and treat Alzheimer*s disease. There is close to twen ty years of academic research at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) into this disease-modifying drug. Their target is A-Beta\, which i s the primary toxic insult in Alzheimer*s disease. It is now generally reg arded as the first thing that goes wrong. Cenna is able to inhibit the pro duction of A-Beta using a novel technology that addresses some of the prob lems encountered with previous attempts by others.J oin us as we explore t he new discoveries on this important topic.

\n

Featuring: Dr. Naznee n Dewji\, President & Founder\, Cenna Biosciences

\n

Dr. Nazneen Dew ji is the President and CEO of Cenna Biosciences Inc. and of Cura Therapeu tics LLC\, in La Jolla\, CA and an Associate Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of California\, San Diego. Nazneen was born in Tanzania and raised in England.? She was educated at the University of London\, wh ere she earned her B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Protein Chem istry and Enzymology. In 1986 she accepted a faculty position in the depar tment of Medicine at UCSD. Since then she has worked on the molecular and cellular mechanisms in Alzheimer*s disease (AD). The discoveries made in h er laboratory at UCSD support the development of new disease-modifying dru g candidates for the treatment of AD. These are currently being developed at Cenna Biosciences Inc\, a start-up company that she\, along with her la te colleague Dr. S. J. Singer\, founded in 2006 and at Cura Therapeutics L LC that Nazneen founded in 2017.? Cenna*s and Cura*s proprietary technolog ies address the underlying cause of the disease\, the inappropriate deposi tion of the toxic species\, ?-amyloid (A?)\, in the brains of patients wit h AD. The Companies have developed novel targets and are developing severa l lead peptide and small molecule compounds as disease-modifying drug cand idates for the treatment of AD. The work so far has been funded by non-dil uting NIH and other grants. The Intellectual Property that forms the basis of Cenna*s and Cura*s approaches is covered by U.S. and foreign Patents.< /p>\n

Here*s how some companies are applying blockchain technology:

\n
\n
    \n

  • \n
  • British Airways last year tested blockch ain to maintain data on flights between London\, Geneva and Miami. The ide a was to stop conflicting flight information from appearing at gates\, on airport monitors\, at airline websites and in customer apps.
  • \n
  • Cargill Inc. tested blockchain in turkey distribution this T hanksgiving\, with some family farms that provide turkeys to Cargill uploa ding data so that shoppers could learn about the provenance of the birds t hey bought from supermarkets. The company in the past has tried various te chnologies to improve traceability in its food supply chain\, including RF ID\, but sees more promise in blockchain\,
  • \n
  • L.L. Bean Inc . wants to test the combination of blockchain and Internet of Thi ngs technology to understand how people use its outdoor gear.?In a test du e to begin this year\, L.L. Bean plans to ship a line of coats and boots w ith sewn-in sensors that send data to the public Ethereum blockchain platf orm.
  • \n
  • Over 40 top financial institutions and a g rowing number of firms across industries are experimenting with distribute d ledger technology as a secure and transparent way to digitally track the ownership of assets\, a move that could speed up transactions and cut cos ts while lowering the risk of fraud.
  • \n
  • The Music industry< /strong> is testing blockchain as a means to manage the micro-transactiona l nature of streaming music\, turning pennies into dollars.
  • \n
\n< p>Corporate spending on blockchain software is expected to reach $2.1 bill ion this year\, up from $945 million in 2017\, according to researcher Int ernational Data Corp. Distribution. Retail and Manufacturing are among the industries due to ramp up blockchain spending in 2018

\n

Eminent ecologist Jerem y B. C. Along their journey\, which quickly expand s to California\, Florida\, and New York\, the pair uncovered surprising a nd profound connections between ecological systems and environmental crise s across the country. Artfully weaving together independent research and e ngaging storytelling\, Jackson and Chapple examine the looming threats fro m recent hurricanes and fires\, industrial agriculture\, river mismanageme nt\, extreme weather events\, drought\, and rising sea levels that are pus hing the country toward the breaking point of ecological and economic coll apse\, in their new book Breakpoint: Reckoning with America*s Environmenta l Crises.

\n

Yet\, despite these challenges\, the authors provide opt imistic and practical solutions for addressing these multidimensional issu es to achieve greater environmental stability\, human well-being\, and fut ure economic prosperity. With a passionate call to action\, they look hope fully toward emerging and achievable solutions to preserve the country*s f uture.

Panel Dis cussion

\n

Who should attend?
\nThis sessio n is for chief technologists\, R&D\, product managers\, developers\, and d esigners who want to better understand the principles of Privacy by Design .

\n

California has two new laws that go into effect Ja nuary 1: the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and SB 327\, an IOT se curity law which mandates that manufacturers that sell or offer to sell a connected device in California equip the device with ※reasonable security features.§

\n

This makes California the first state to specifically r egulate the security of connective devices\, which are commonly referred t o as Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the CCPA is one of most comprehe nsive state privacy laws to go into effect since the EU enacted General Da ta Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018.

\n

In contrast to California data privacy laws protecting only personal information\, the new security law aims to protect the security of both IoT devices\, and any informatio n contained on IoT devices.

\n

Given this focus on legislating privac y and security we should be thinking ahead and addressing these principles during the design process. While SB 327 focuses on IoT specifically (this includes connected things such as connected cars\, industrial devices\, r etail point-of-sale or medical devices\, to name a few)\, privacy can impa ct other products and apps as well\, including social apps\, media\, and t elecommunications.? Across the board\, these two new acts have an impact o n a wide number of products and services.

\n

Examples where P rivacy by Design was needed

\n

When we look at the Facebook data privacy scandal around the collection and sharing of personally ident ifiable information on as many as 87 million people or read in recent news about hackers who have been able to spy on children via popular ※smart ho me§ security apps\, we realize that even honestly designed products can en d up with unintended consequences.? As our world becomes more mobile and m ore connected\, how can developers build privacy and security into their p roducts to keep their customers safe and secure?

\n

Panel Foc us

\n

This panel will consist of technical\, product\, and d esign professionals who will focus on how we can apply design principles t hat will make our new products safe and secure.

\n

What is Pr ivacy by Design?

\n

The term ※Privacy by Design§ means ※dat a protection through technology design.§ ※Privacy by Design§ along with ※P rivacy by Default§ are one of the key changes that were brought into the G eneral Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that went into effect in Europe i n May 2018.

\n

※Privacy by Design§ and ※Privacy by Default§ have been frequently discussed topics related to data protection. The first thought s of ※Privacy by Design§ were expressed in the 1970s and were incorporated in the 1990s into the RL 95/46/EC data protection directive. According to recital 46 in this Directive\, Technical and Organizational Measures (TOM ) must be taken already at the time of planning a processing system to pro tect data safety.

\n

Startups and New Product Introductions: MVP vs. Privacy / Security

\n

As entrepreneurs we tend to th ink in terms of Minimally Viable Product or MVP when we first launch a pro duct or app\, and typically instantiating privacy or security at that poin t is thought to take up too much time or investment and risk ※holding us b ack§ in a competitive space. Yet that leaves a window of vulnerability. Wh en should we consider designing in privacy and security? Is there ※right§ timing?

\n

For that answer and more\, join us Wednesday\, January 15.
